CZM Projects
Lake Erie-Allegheny Earth Force
The Lake Erie-Allegheny Earth Force will use the CZM grant to continue their programs in environmental education. One component of the project is the Storm Drain Sentries where students map out or stencil where water ends up once it flows into a storm drain. Earth Force is also educating local youth on GIS and their applications in environmental issues.
Construction
East Canal Basin Fishing Pier:
The Erie-Western PA Port Authority will use CZM funds to construct a 1,400 square foot public pier in the canal basin, just east of the State Street dock.

Propagation of Native Plant Species for Habitat Restoration:
The Biology Department at Mercyhurst College is identifying 20-30 native plant species that are well-suited to control bluff erosion. Seed trials were photo-documented and recorded and the successful seedlings were planted at the State Game Lands 314.

Girard Township plans to use CZM funds to complete a master site plan for the Lake Erie Community Park that will include a boundary survey, an update of a 1995 feasibility study, and three public workshops.

Sceiford and Maas Farms:
CZM funds were used to purchase the development rights to two farms in the coastal zone, totaling 109 acres.

Shades Beach Off-Shore Improvements Redesign:
The grant for Harborcreek Township funded the redesign of a boat launch facility at Shades Beach, which included alternative designs, the extent of offshore breakwaters required, and the navigable depth of the proposed basin.
